Bihar Telecom Circle comprise of 38 Revenue Districts and 102 Revenue sub - Divisions covering a geographical area of 0.96 Lakh sq. kms . The total population is 8.29 Crores of which urban population is 0.87 Crores and rural population is 7.42 Crores as per 2001 census. Bihar Telecom Circle is divided into 12 SSAs (19 telecom districts) and 104 Short Distance Charging Areas (SDCA) for providing better and efficient telecom facilities and proper administrative control.

All the 1,169 exchanges are of electronic type. 17 Trunk Automatic Exchanges are working at SSA headquarters. Large Scale introduction of OFC and Digital Microwave / UHF in the local and long distance network in Bihar Circle has resulted in better STD/ISD services. At present there are 17,62,879 telephone connections ( including WLL & Mobile) in Bihar . Out of 38,475 inhabited villages in Bihar 38,475 villages are having telecom facilities. The Tele density of the circle is 2.35 per 100 persons against the national average of 7 per 100 persons. Ambitious plans have been drawn to clear the waiting list and make the telephone on demand.

Internet facility is available on local charging from all places in Bihar, where telephone facility is available.
